The Austrian capital of Vienna, and the Sound of Music city Salzburg, are truly magical destinations to be at Christmas time. Traditional Christmas Markets bring a special atmosphere to squares and public areas that are decorated with wooden huts selling everything from clothing, decorative ornaments, hot food and drink. You might have visited these 2 cities in summer - but the cloak of winter gives them both a surreal atmosphere.
The Christmas Markets - Vienna:
During Advent Vienna is a city of nostalgia and romance, concerts and nativity displays and traditional Christmas markets. Classics include the Christmas market at Schönbrunn Palace (which runs from 28.11.13-26.12.13), the Christmas market in front of City Hall, the traditional Viennese Christmas market on Freyung, the markets at Spittelberg, Am Hof and in front of the church of St. Charles Borromeo (Karlskirche), and . The aromas of candied fruits, cotton candy and other delicacies like Christmas punch and roasted chestnuts wafting around the small wooden market stalls still retain their magical power. The Magic of Advent in Vienna during November and December complements the market in front of City Hall. The adjoining Rathauspark is a place of seasonal inspiration with festively adorned trees, pony-riding, trips on the Christkindl Express and fairytale scenes portrayed in artistically-arranged displays. The Magic of Advent with its many attractions and Christmas market stalls will be open this year daily, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. from 15 November through 23 December, and until 5 p.m. on 24 December (Christmas Eve). Please note: all marketdates/times subject to change.
The Christmas Markets - Salzburg:
The Old Town, the fortress, the numerous castles and all the other famous squares and places in and around Salzburg do not only spray their flair in the summertime, but also have their own charm in Christmas- and wintertime. After a romantic walk over the city hills, which offer a stunning view over the snowy rooftops, cupolas and towers of Salzburg, a visit of the Salzburger Christkindlmarkt (Christmas Market) is the traditional highlight during the pre-Christmas season.
Salzburger Christkindlmarkt am Domplatz
Salzburg’s most famous Christmas Market, situated within the great scenery of the Dom and the Residenz Palace, usually opens its doors five weeks before Christmas. Every year, visitors can enjoy choirs, musicians playing French horn and trombone and pastoral plays. The sweet smell of roasted almonds, hot chestnuts, mulled wine (“Glühwein”) and glogg (“Punsch”) attracts the Old and the Young. Surrounded by the sound of the choirs, musicians and church bells, people walk through the peaceful market admiring the artful crafts and indulge themselves in remembrances of their childhood.
In specially designed wooden market stalls at the Dom Square and Residenz Square, artisans, confectioners and other merchants offer gingerbread hearts, sweets, figurines for the nativity scene, toys, warm pullovers and other specialities of Salzburg.
