The Austrian capital of Vienna, the historical city of Graz and the alpine capital Innsbruck, are truly magical destinations to be at Christmas time. Traditional Christmas Markets bring a special atmosphere to squares and public areas that aredecorated with wooden huts selling everything from clothing, decorative ornaments, hot food and drink. You might have visited these 3 cities in summer - but the cloak of winter gives them all a surreal atmosphere.
The Christmas Markets - Vienna:
During Advent Vienna is a city of nostalgia and romance, concerts and nativity displays and traditional Christmas markets. Classics include the Christmas market at Schönbrunn Palace (which runs from 28.11.13-26.12.13), the Christmas market in front of City Hall, the traditional Viennese Christmas market on Freyung, the markets at Spittelberg, Am Hof and in front of the church of St. Charles Borromeo (Karlskirche), and . The aromas of candied fruits, cotton candy and other delicacies like Christmas punch and roasted chestnuts wafting around the small wooden market stalls still retain their magical power. The Magic of Advent in Vienna during November and December complements the market in front of City Hall. The adjoining Rathauspark is a place of seasonal inspiration with festively adorned trees, pony-riding, trips on the Christkindl Express and fairytale scenes portrayed in artistically-arranged displays. The Magic of Advent with its many attractions and Christmas market stalls will be open this year daily, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. from 15 November through 23 December, and until 5 p.m. on 24 December (Christmas Eve). Please note: all market dates/times subject to change.
The Christmas Markets - Graz:
Discover Graz and its numerous Christmas markets! The oldest Christmas market takes place around the Franciscan church. Styrian arts and crafts, regional farm products, hot punch and mulled wine warm the heart.
Close by is the Christmas market in front of the City Hall with the giant Christmas tree and the old fashioned merry-go-round for children. Watch out for the huge advent calendar on the façade of the City Hall.
If you want to combine your Christmas shopping with a good cause and some good entertainment, you’re in the right place at Eiserne Tor. This market is run exclusively by local charity organisations and the proceeds go to selected charity projects. And not to miss the monumental ice sculpture in the Landhaushof depicting the nativity scene. This magical Christmas manger, made with about 50 tons of crystal-clear ice, is sure to be an amazing – if transitory – work of art again in 2009.
The Christmas Markets - Innsbruck:
Discover a market for the whole family! Happening daily from 23rd November to 28th December 2013 you will find a fabulous world of Christmas stalls and activities. On 3rd December at approximately 6:30 p.m. there is a ghostly and flaming atmosphere when the traditional "Rattenberger Perchten" visits the Christmas market and its guests.
On 4th December Santa Claus will visit the LANDHAUSPLATZ - as in past years by helicopter bringing all children a special surprise.
Musical performances are on offer along with festive products and mouth watering food all offering a wide variety catering for every taste.
With a typical Advent atmosphere - this market is ideal for everybody who wants to enjoy those special weeks before Christmas Eve. Please note: all market dates/times subject to change.
