    • THE BREGENZERWALD

      & THE BRANDNER VALLEY

      A 9-day self-guided hiking tour

The region Bregenzerwald in the west of Austria is a lovely landscape with soft hills and some steep rocks. The natural richness of wood was (and again is) used for building houses, visible in the idyllic wooden houses and the modern architecture of the valley. A contrast forms the crossing to the Brandner Valley, where high mountains with their 3.000ers form an impressive background.

      Route Character

Routes of medium difficulty on good trails and paths. Daily distance up to 6 hours and height differences get higher. Good training level for some parts is required – you walk up to 17 km. Also summits of up to 2.000 m may be included. Sufficient gear is required.

      Route direction

Day 1:   Individual arrival at Schwarzenberg or at station Dornbirn

A taxi brings you to your hotel.

      Day 2:   Schwarzenberg - Mellau

The hiking tour starts on the pass Bödele, where you enjoy a beautiful view on the Bregenzewald. You continue with a climb through the forest up to the Alps, where you have an excellent panorama view. Downhill is a bit steeper, but many opportunities for snacks are sweetening the day.

      Day 3:   Mellau - Damüls

Ascent by cable car and then you walk over alpine pastures into the direction of the Mittagsspitze (2.095), which you can climb if you feel like it. On you proceed to the Ugaalpe, where you take the cable car or descend to the valley on foot. Your choice of the route answers for the length of today’s distance.

      Day 4:   Damüls – Fontanella

Today you walk on the Unterdamülser path to the alpine pasture of the Türtscher Alpe. The next station is Mittelberg and Fontanella.

      Day 5:   Fontanella – Bludenz

A brief transfer brings you to Raggal, where you follow the long distance trail no. 633 into the mountains. Of course there are some huts on the way and also a climb on a peak is possible.

      Day 6:   Bludenz – Dalaas

The old Roman road to Innerbraz and then on to the Garvaralpe is the program for today, extended by some further alpine pastures.

      Day 7:   Dalaas – Tschagguns

Lovely panorama walks bring you into the Montafon, where huge mountains and glaciers wait for you. Down into the valley by post bus.

      Day 8:   Tschagguns - Brand

This will be the longest day, thus you should rise early. By cable car you ascent up to 1.900 m and take the Latzschätzer balcony path to Lindauer hut. After that you follow the long distance trail past summits, huts and meadows to the lake Lünersee, where you glide down into the valley.

Day 9:   Transfer to your start hotel.
